Methods of learning Spanish for a native English speaker?
Filed Under Learn Spanish Words | 5 Comments
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to become fluent in Spanish. It’s been a dream of mine for years. I just now finished high school and I’m going off to college next year. I’m close to being fluent in German but I still have a ways to go. However, although German is difficult, I am somehow able to understand the words better as opposed to Spanish words which when spoken seem like constant vowel shifts and I can never tell when a word is beginning or ending. I really want to become fluent though, I plan to become an international business man and Spanish is an absolute MUST!!! I really can’t afford to travel to a Spanish speaking country for at least another 2-3 years but I need to be fluent by the time I graduate college in 4 years. Are there any tips or methods anyone has used that helps them gain fluency in Spanish quickly? Any type of tip is appreciated!
Another thing…I don’t work well with C.D.s and stuff like that. i learned German by myself off the internet using a lot of websites and listening to music and stuff like that… I also had a few penpals in Germany that I wrote with so that helped… but no..C.D.’s and computer programs don’t really help me…I don’t learn well using them. My main problem…is that I can’t process sentences… All the words seem to run together and I cna’t tell when the word is ending begining…all that… I can learn teh grammatical stuff easily and remember it all… I just can process it when it’s spoken to me.

Does Obama think the language problem isn’t Hispanics not learning English, but Anglos not learning Spanish?
Filed Under Learn Spanish Words | 12 Comments
This was what he was intimating in the latest Democratic Primary debate in Austin this past week. When asked about Hispanics in the U.S. needing to learn English, he turned the question around by saying that everyone should learn another language so why don’t we teach young people in our schools to learn Spanish. Or in OTHER WORDS…the problem is not with the minority in America not aclimating to the national (not official, but national) language of the country they live in, but rather the majority should adjust to accomodate the minority.
Doesn’t that sound like a clever cop-out to appeal to Hispanic voters by saying, “All you who can’t speak English…Vote for ME because I will take the problem off your shoulders by saying it is the English-speakers fault for not learning YOUR language.”
Is this TRULY what he is up to, i.e. to woo the Hispanic vote by absolving them of the responsibility to acclimate to the language in the US, at least in spirit? How do you feel about that?

Is it possible to learn Spanish from a CD/DVD/book/internet site? If so, what do you suggest?

In high school I (for some reason unknown to me now) too Latin as my foreign language…I wish that I had taken Spanish. My soon to be husband is Mexican and in 6 months we’re moving to Mexico. He has taught me a few words/phrases, but I still pretty much know nothing. I’ve never met his family before and I want to be able to communicate with them right from the start.
I can’t really afford to take a class, so what would you suggest? Also, I’m having trouble rolling my “r”s…my fiance tried to explain to me how to do it, but I just can’t get it. I’ve looked on yahoo!answers for suggestions, but none of them helped but I thought I would ask again. Thank you!
